Sewing machine problems and how to fix them

Five faults cover almost everything that goes wrong. Work through them in this order and most are free to fix in ten minutes.

Before diagnosing anything, do these two things: rethread the machine completely with the presser foot up, and put in a new needle. Between them they resolve most sewing machine faults, both are free, and both take under five minutes. Only then work through the specific symptom.

The universal first step

It is worth understanding why rethreading is so effective. The top thread's tension comes from two metal plates it passes between — the tension discs — and those discs are held open by the presser foot lever. Thread the machine with the foot down and the thread never seats between them, so it has no tension at all. That single mistake produces loose stitches, loops underneath, and thread nests.

The needle is the other free fix. A needle blunts from friction after roughly eight hours of sewing, and it bends invisibly the moment it strikes a pin. A blunt or bent needle produces skipped stitches, snagged fabric, popping noises and broken thread. It looks identical to a sharp one.

The needle you should already own two packs of

A slight ball point that sews both knit and woven fabric, which is why it is the only needle a first project actually requires — and the one most people never replace often enough.

SCHMETZ describes the universal needle in seven words: 'General sewing of knit and woven fabrics. Slight ball point.' That slight ball point is the whole design. A perfectly sharp point pierces the yarns of a woven cloth cleanly and cuts through the loops of a knit, causing runs. A full ball point pushes knit loops aside but struggles to pierce a dense woven. The universal splits the difference, badly enough that a specialist needle beats it on any one fabric, and well enough that it is the only needle a first project needs.

Buy sizes 80/12 and 90/14, and understand what the two numbers mean: they are the same measurement in two systems, metric (NM) and imperial (Singer). An 80/12 is 0.8 mm across the blade. Lighter fabric wants a smaller number; heavier fabric wants a bigger one. Quilting cotton and shirting sew happily on an 80/12. Denim-weight woven, canvas and multiple layers want a 90/14.

The mistake almost every beginner makes is not buying the wrong needle, it is keeping the right one too long. A needle blunts from the friction of passing through fabric thousands of times, and a blunt needle is a leading cause of skipped stitches, snagged fabric and thread that keeps breaking — the exact symptoms people diagnose as a broken machine. Change it when you start a significant project, and change it after roughly eight hours of sewing.

Not stopping mid-seam to wind another one

Class 15 transparent bobbins

Both Singer machines on this site take a Class 15 transparent bobbin, and three is not enough — a transparent bobbin also lets you see the thread running out before it does.

Start with the warning, because it is the one that costs people an evening: bobbin class is not universal, and a nearly-right bobbin is worse than no bobbin. A bobbin that is fractionally too tall, too wide or made of the wrong material will sit at a slight angle in the case, feed thread unevenly, and produce exactly the nest of loops underneath your fabric that people diagnose as a broken machine. Singer publishes the bobbin class for both machines on this site as Class 15 transparent, and recommends SINGER or INSPIRA branded bobbins for best results. Your manual states yours.

Assuming you have the right class, the reason to buy more is simple arithmetic. Brother ships three bobbins with the CS7000X, the XM2701 and the LX3817, and four with the XR9550. A single garment in two thread colors plus a basting color uses three. The moment you run out mid-seam you have to unthread the machine, wind a bobbin, and re-thread — and re-threading is where the next problem starts.

Transparent rather than metal, for a beginner, for one reason: you can see how much thread is left. Running the bobbin dry in the middle of a topstitch line is a specific kind of annoying, because the top thread keeps stitching and you do not notice until you turn the work over.

Wind one bobbin per color you use regularly and keep them on a bobbin ring. It is the cheapest quality-of-life improvement in this whole list.

What works

  • Transparent, so you can see the thread level without unthreading the machine
  • Cheap enough to wind one per thread color and stop re-winding
  • Class 15 is the most widely used home bobbin class, so replacements are easy to find

What does not

  • Bobbin class is not universal. Check your manual — the wrong class will seat badly and cause bunching, and some machines specify a plastic or a metal bobbin, not both
  • Singer explicitly recommends its own or INSPIRA-branded bobbins for best results
  • A cheap out-of-spec bobbin is a common cause of the tension problems people blame on their machine

T-shirt fabric and anything that stretches

Jersey / ball point needles

The needle that stops a knit from laddering — the difference between a T-shirt seam that holds and one that runs the first time it is stretched.

A knit fabric is made of loops, not a grid. Push a sharp needle through a loop and you sever it, and a severed loop unravels — that is what a run in a T-shirt is, and it is why a first attempt at hemming a jersey top so often produces a line of small holes along the stitching.

SCHMETZ describes the jersey / ball point needle as 'designed for sewing on knits and some stretch fabrics' and publishes it in 70/10, 80/12, 90/14 and 100/16, plus an assorted pack. The rounded tip slips between the loops rather than through them.

There is a second needle worth knowing about, because people buy the wrong one of the pair. SCHMETZ also publishes a stretch needle, 'designed for synthetic suede or elastic knitwear' with 'a deep scarf to prevent skipped stitches'. The scarf is the groove above the eye where the bobbin hook passes. On a very elastic fabric the material moves as the needle enters, the hook misses the loop of top thread and you get a skipped stitch; a deeper scarf gives the hook more room. So: jersey needle for ordinary T-shirt knits, stretch needle for swimwear, activewear and anything with elastane.

If your machine has been skipping stitches on knit fabric, change the needle before you change anything else. It is the cheapest fix on the list and it is right more often than any tension adjustment.

What works

  • Pushes knit loops aside instead of cutting them, which is what prevents runs and holes
  • Fixes most 'my machine skips stitches on T-shirt fabric' problems without touching a setting
  • Cheap enough that there is no reason not to own a pack before you sew your first knit

What does not

  • Wrong needle for woven fabric — the rounded point struggles to pierce a dense weave
  • SCHMETZ lists a separate stretch needle with a deeper scarf for elastic knitwear and synthetic suede; for very stretchy fabric that is the better tool
  • Not a substitute for a walking foot or a stretch stitch — it solves the needle half of the problem only

Problem 1 — thread bunching underneath

Cause: the top thread is not in the tension discs, so the take-up lever cannot pull the slack back up.

Fix: rethread with the presser foot up. This is the most common problem in home sewing and it has its own page, because it deserves one.

Problem 2 — skipped stitches

Cause: the bobbin hook is missing the loop of top thread as it passes. Something is preventing the needle presenting that loop where the hook expects it.

  1. The needle is not pushed fully up into the clamp. Even half a millimeter low and the hook passes above the loop. Loosen the screw, push the needle up until it stops, retighten.
  2. The needle is in backwards. Flat side of the shank to the back on almost every domestic machine.
  3. The needle is blunt or bent. Replace it.
  4. The needle is the wrong type for the fabric. This is the big one on knits: a sharp point cuts the loops and a ball point does not. SCHMETZ's jersey needle is 'designed for sewing on knits and some stretch fabrics'; for very elastic fabric, its stretch needle has 'a deep scarf to prevent skipped stitches' — the scarf being the hollow above the eye where the hook passes.
  5. The fabric is being pulled. Pulling fabric through deflects the needle sideways. Let the feed dogs do the work.

Problem 3 — the thread keeps breaking

  1. Rethread, with the foot up. A thread caught around the spool pin or missing a guide gets pulled tight and snaps.
  2. Change the needle. A burr on a bent needle's eye shreds thread.
  3. Check the thread itself. Cheap thread spun from short fibers breaks at thin spots; old thread, particularly cotton, degrades. Tug a length between your hands — if it snaps easily, bin it. More on thread.
  4. Check the thread is not too thick for the needle groove. Heavy topstitching thread needs a topstitch needle, which SCHMETZ specifies with 'an enlarged groove to accommodate large diameter threads'.
  5. Check the spool is not catching, on a nick in its end notch. Hold the spool loosely in your hand for a few inches; if the breaking stops, that was it.

Problem 4 — the machine is eating the fabric

The fabric gets pulled down into the hole in the needle plate at the start of a seam. It happens with fine fabric and at the very edge of a piece.

  1. Hold both thread tails behind the presser foot for the first three or four stitches. Without tension on them, the needle pushes the loose threads down through the plate and takes the fabric with them.
  2. Start half an inch in and reverse back to the edge, rather than starting at the very edge.
  3. Use a straight-stitch needle plate if your machine has one — a plate with a small round hole rather than a wide slot, which gives the fabric far less room to be pushed through.
  4. Sew onto a leader. Start on a scrap, sew off it straight onto your fabric, and snip the join afterwards.
  5. Use a smaller needle for fine fabric. A 100/16 in lawn is punching a hole big enough to pull through.

Problem 5 — puckered seams

  1. Top tension too tight. This is the one case where the tension dial is the right tool — but rethread first, because a mis-threaded machine mimics high tension.
  2. Needle too large for the fabric. A big needle makes a big hole and the thread pulls the fabric in around it.
  3. Stitch length too long for a fine fabric. Shorten it.
  4. The fabric is being stretched as it feeds, which is the classic wavy hem on knits. A walking foot fixes it.

Problem 6 — the machine jams or will not turn

Stop immediately. Do not force the handwheel and do not press the pedal harder — you can bend the hook or throw the timing, which turns a free fix into a repair bill.

  1. Raise the presser foot and cut the top thread above the fabric.
  2. Gently ease the fabric out. If it will not come, remove the needle plate and the bobbin so you can see what is caught.
  3. Clear every thread fragment from the bobbin race. A single trapped loop will jam the hook again the moment you restart.
  4. Turn the handwheel toward you by hand through a full rotation to confirm it moves freely.
  5. Rethread top and bobbin and test on scrap.

If the handwheel still will not turn freely by hand after the bobbin area is completely clear, stop. That is the point at which a machine needs a service rather than another attempt.

Problem 7 — the fabric is not moving at all

  • The presser foot is up. By far the most common cause. The foot has to press the fabric onto the feed dogs.
  • The feed dogs are dropped, for free-motion sewing. There is a lever or switch, usually at the back or under the free arm.
  • A darning plate is fitted, which covers the feed teeth. SINGER includes one with the M1500 for exactly this purpose.
  • The bobbin winder spindle is still pushed across, which on most machines disengages the needle drive.

When it is not a fault at all

Two situations look like faults and are not. Thick multi-layer seams, where the machine stalls at a jeans side seam, are a feeding limitation — the feed dogs cannot grip fabric that bridges rather than sits flat. The answer is a hump jumper and, if your machine has it, more presser foot pressure. Singer lists that adjustment on the Heavy Duty 4423; Brother lists it as 'No' on the CS7000X, XM2701 and LX3817. And noise. Sewing machines are not quiet. A regular mechanical rhythm is normal; a new grinding, knocking or scraping sound is not, and that is worth stopping for.

Why does my sewing machine keep jamming?
