A slight ball point that sews both knit and woven fabric, which is why it is the only needle a first project actually requires — and the one most people never replace often enough.

SCHMETZ describes the universal needle in seven words: 'General sewing of knit and woven fabrics. Slight ball point.' That slight ball point is the whole design. A perfectly sharp point pierces the yarns of a woven cloth cleanly and cuts through the loops of a knit, causing runs. A full ball point pushes knit loops aside but struggles to pierce a dense woven. The universal splits the difference, badly enough that a specialist needle beats it on any one fabric, and well enough that it is the only needle a first project needs.

Buy sizes 80/12 and 90/14, and understand what the two numbers mean: they are the same measurement in two systems, metric (NM) and imperial (Singer). An 80/12 is 0.8 mm across the blade. Lighter fabric wants a smaller number; heavier fabric wants a bigger one. Quilting cotton and shirting sew happily on an 80/12. Denim-weight woven, canvas and multiple layers want a 90/14.

The mistake almost every beginner makes is not buying the wrong needle, it is keeping the right one too long. A needle blunts from the friction of passing through fabric thousands of times, and a blunt needle is a leading cause of skipped stitches, snagged fabric and thread that keeps breaking — the exact symptoms people diagnose as a broken machine. Change it when you start a significant project, and change it after roughly eight hours of sewing.

T-shirt fabric and anything that stretches

Jersey / ball point needles

The needle that stops a knit from laddering — the difference between a T-shirt seam that holds and one that runs the first time it is stretched.

A knit fabric is made of loops, not a grid. Push a sharp needle through a loop and you sever it, and a severed loop unravels — that is what a run in a T-shirt is, and it is why a first attempt at hemming a jersey top so often produces a line of small holes along the stitching.

SCHMETZ describes the jersey / ball point needle as 'designed for sewing on knits and some stretch fabrics' and publishes it in 70/10, 80/12, 90/14 and 100/16, plus an assorted pack. The rounded tip slips between the loops rather than through them.

There is a second needle worth knowing about, because people buy the wrong one of the pair. SCHMETZ also publishes a stretch needle, 'designed for synthetic suede or elastic knitwear' with 'a deep scarf to prevent skipped stitches'. The scarf is the groove above the eye where the bobbin hook passes. On a very elastic fabric the material moves as the needle enters, the hook misses the loop of top thread and you get a skipped stitch; a deeper scarf gives the hook more room. So: jersey needle for ordinary T-shirt knits, stretch needle for swimwear, activewear and anything with elastane.

If your machine has been skipping stitches on knit fabric, change the needle before you change anything else. It is the cheapest fix on the list and it is right more often than any tension adjustment.

What works

Hemming jeans and anything thick

A reinforced blade and a medium ball point built to go through layers without deflecting — the needle that turns 'my machine cannot hem jeans' into a job it can do.

Hemming jeans is the single most common reason someone buys a first sewing machine, and it is the job most likely to end with a broken needle. The reason is deflection. SCHMETZ's own description of the denim needle names it directly: the needle is built 'for penetrating extra thick woven fabrics, denims, or quilts with minimum needle deflection, reduced risk of needle breakage and skipped stitches.'

Here is what deflection means in practice. A standard needle blade is thin enough to flex. Drive it into six layers of denim at the seam and it bends a fraction of a millimeter sideways. That is enough to make it miss the bobbin hook — a skipped stitch — or to hit the edge of the needle plate hole, which snaps it. A denim needle has a thicker, stiffer blade so it goes where it was pointed.

The point geometry is the other half. SCHMETZ specifies a medium ball point, not a sharp one, which sounds backwards for a tough fabric and is not: denim is a tight weave, and a medium ball point slides between the warp and weft yarns rather than cutting them, which is less damaging to the cloth and less likely to blunt the needle.

Buy 100/16 for jeans hems and 90/14 for heavy cotton, canvas and multi-layer quilting seams. SCHMETZ publishes the range from 70/10 to 110/18 plus a twin denim needle — that twin is what produces the two parallel gold topstitch lines a factory jeans hem has, in one pass.

What works

Piecing and quilting through batting

Quilting needles, 75/11 and 90/14

A tapered shaft and a slightly rounded point designed not to damage layered material — the needle for the moment a quilt stops being two pieces of cotton and becomes a sandwich.

SCHMETZ describes the quilting needle as having a 'special taper to shaft and slightly rounded point to prevent damage to material sewn in layers'. Both halves of that sentence are doing work.

The taper first. When you quilt, the needle is not going through one thickness of cotton — it is going through a top, batting, a backing, and wherever seams cross, four or six thicknesses of pieced seam allowance. A parallel-sided needle drags all of that with it. A tapered shaft narrows behind the point, so the hole it makes closes behind it and the layers stay put rather than being pushed down into the needle plate.

The rounded point is the same logic as the ball point on a universal needle, applied to a different problem: quilting cotton is finely woven and a sharp point cuts fibers. Over a whole quilt, thousands of cut fibers is a visibly weaker seam.

Two sizes cover it. Use 75/11 for piecing flat blocks, where you want the smallest hole possible, and 90/14 once the batting is in. If you are quilting something heavy — a denim quilt, or a top with dense wadding — SCHMETZ's denim needle is the better tool, because at that point stiffness matters more than taper.

What works

Fine fabric and dead-straight topstitching

Microtex / sharp needles

A genuinely sharp point for delicate and microfibre fabrics — the needle to reach for when a universal is puckering silk or wandering off a straight line.

SCHMETZ specifies the microtex needle as a 'sharp point for straight stitches on delicate and microfiber fabrics', in sizes from 60/8 up to 90/14. It is the opposite design decision to the universal: where a universal compromises with a slight ball point, this one commits to being sharp.

The situation where it earns its place is dense, fine cloth — microfibre, lining, cotton lawn, silk. Those fabrics are woven tightly enough that a slightly rounded point can slide sideways along the surface before it finds a gap to enter, which is what puts a barely visible waver in a topstitch line and what puckers a seam.

The 60/8 is the smallest home needle SCHMETZ publishes in any type, and that is the point of it. In fine fabric, hole size is the whole game — a needle too large leaves a permanent perforation line you can see against the light, and no amount of pressing removes it.

Do not use it on jersey. A sharp point through a knit loop cuts the loop, and a cut loop runs. If your project is a mix, that is what the universal needle exists for.

What works

Topstitch needles

An enlarged groove for large-diameter thread, which is the actual reason topstitching thread shreds and breaks on a normal needle.

Skip this one

Our skip for a beginner, and a genuine one rather than a token. A topstitch needle's enlarged groove exists to shelter large-diameter thread; with ordinary all-purpose thread it does nothing a universal needle does not already do. Buy it the day you buy a spool of heavy topstitching thread and not a day earlier. Spending here instead of on a second pack of universal needles is the wrong trade.

If you have tried to sew visible topstitching in heavy thread and watched it fray and snap every few inches, the needle is almost certainly the cause. SCHMETZ describes the topstitch needle as 'extra sharp with an enlarged groove to accommodate large diameter threads and dense fabrics'.

The groove is the long channel down the front of the needle blade. Its job is to shelter the thread as the needle passes through fabric, so the thread is not scraped between steel and cloth on every stitch. A groove sized for all-purpose thread is too shallow for topstitching thread, so the thread rides proud, abrades, and eventually parts.

This is a genuinely narrow tool and we would rather say so than pad a list. If you are sewing with ordinary all-purpose polyester thread you will notice no benefit at all — a universal needle's groove is already the right size. Buy it the day you buy a spool of heavy topstitching thread, and not before.

SCHMETZ publishes it in 80/12, 90/14 and 100/16 only, which tells you what it is for: nothing light.

Knowing which needle is in the machine

Here is the problem it solves, and it is a genuine one: you cannot identify a sewing machine needle by looking at it. Once it is out of the packet, an 80/12 universal and a 90/14 jersey are two small pieces of steel. So people do one of two things — bin a needle that has an hour of life left, or put an unidentified needle back in the machine and spend an evening wondering why the stitches are wrong.

SCHMETZ's description is specific: 'Organize them in the Grabbit myPad by needle type and size. Needle types are color-coded with the SCHMETZ color chart. Simply slip the needle into the appropriate type and size cell on this super thick felt pad. Includes a flower pin to designate the needle that is currently being used in the machine.' It is 6.75 by 6.75 inches, and SCHMETZ states that almost every needle type and size is represented.

The flower pin is the part worth the money. Marking which needle is currently in the machine means you know, three weeks later, whether the needle in there is the jersey needle you used on a T-shirt or the denim needle from the jeans hem — and therefore whether it is the right one for what you are about to sew.

We would not call this a first purchase. It earns its place once you own three or four needle types, which for most people is a few months in. Until then a strip of masking tape on a pill box does the same job for nothing, and we would rather say that than pretend otherwise.

What works

  • The flower pin solves a real problem: you cannot tell a needle's size by looking at it
  • Lets a part-used needle be kept rather than binned, which pays for itself
  • Color-coded to the SCHMETZ chart, so the pad and the packets agree

Reading the two numbers on the packet

Every needle carries a size like 80/12 or 90/14. Those are the same measurement in two systems: the first is metric (NM), the second is the Singer numbering. An 80/12 needle has a blade 0.8 mm across. Bigger number, thicker needle, bigger hole.

Match the size to the fabric weight, not to the machine. A fine cotton lawn or a lining wants a 70/10. Quilting cotton, shirting and most cotton dressmaking fabric wants an 80/12. Denim-weight woven, canvas and multiple layers want a 90/14 or a 100/16. Too small and the needle bends or breaks; too large and it leaves visible perforations you cannot press out.

The mistake that is not about buying the wrong needle

It is keeping the right one too long. A needle blunts from friction — thousands of passes through fabric — and a blunt needle causes skipped stitches, snagged and pulled threads in the fabric, a popping sound as it enters, and thread that keeps breaking. Those are the exact symptoms people describe when they think their machine has developed a fault.

Change the needle at the start of any project you care about, and after roughly eight hours of sewing. If you are working through our troubleshooting guide, changing the needle is step two after rethreading, and it resolves more problems than any tension adjustment.

Twin needles: read your manual first

SCHMETZ publishes twin needles in universal, denim, stretch, embroidery and metallic. A twin needle produces two parallel rows of stitching from one needle bar, and it is how you get the professional-looking double topstitch on a jeans hem or a stretchy double hem on a T-shirt.

Two cautions. Not every machine can take one, and on machines that can, not every stitch is safe with one — a zigzag at full width will swing a twin needle into the needle plate and snap both. Your manual states the maximum twin needle width for your machine. Brother includes a twin needle in the box with the CS7000X, the XM2701 and the XR9550, which tells you those machines expect it.
